Think…what would Pretty Woman be without Julia Roberts amazing transformation red dress or the Indiana Jones series without Indy’s leather jacket and signature fedora?

A new exhibit has come to L.A. called Hollywood Costume. Put on by The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, together with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, this exhibit is a detailed look into the very important contribution costume designers give to the film industry.

Located in the old Wilshire May Company Building (the future home of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures) at Wilshire and Fairfax, the touring exhibit is making it’s last stop right here in Los Angeles. With over 150 costumes spanning from the Golden Age of Hollywood (mid 1920s to early ’60s) to the present, there is something for every movie fan.

There are so many reasons to go see Hollywood Costume , but I’ve managed to narrow it down to just 5:

1. GET TO KNOW THE DESIGNERS Often the people behind the screen get overlooked, but in Hollywood Costume, you have the opportunity to get to know the artists behind the seams. From lessor known designers to legends like Edith Head and Colleen Atwood, the show gives you a look into their creative minds.

2. RELIVE THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD Most of us still have stars in our eyes when we think of the days of Chaplin, Hitchcock and splashy 50’s musicals. With many authentic pieces on display from the Golden years, you can take a step back in time to when Hollywood was in its shimmering heyday.

3. FEEL LIKE A DESIGNER This is exhibit is so comprehensive you will actually get to feel like you are a designer. It’s divided into three parts or “Acts” which take you from the beginning stages of the design process, to in-depth special interviews, to historic context and then to an exciting “Vamps & Vixens” and “Gunslingers & Blades” finale. In Vamps & Vixens you can actually see the famous white silk halter dress Marilyn Monroe wore in The Seven Year Itch (Travilla,1955), while in Gunslingers & Blades Hollywood good guys and bad guys are pitted against each other with costumes including Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow (Penny Rose) and Daniel Craig as James Bond from Casino Royale(Lindy Hemming).

4. SEE THE RUBY SLIPPERS UP CLOSE Dorothy’s Ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz are practically priceless. It’s a real treat to see the carefully preserved shoes up close. If your kids or grandchildren love The Wizard of OZ , it’s a chance for them to connect with the movie in a different way.

Finally my number one reason to see Hollywood Costume is drumroll…

5. Indiana Jones My favorite archaeologist/hero–or at least his iconic leather jacket, fedora and whip will be on display. Exhibit curator and an Academy Award winning costume designer herself, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, went to great lengths searching through George Lucas’s Skywalker Archives to find the first leather jacket Harrison Ford wore and his original fedora.

While we can’t all actually be on the silver screen, Hollywood Costume reminds us that one of the best things about living in Los Angeles is that the magic of movies is always just a few “ruby slipper clicks” away.

Hollywood Costume runs from now until March 2, 2015.
